When to Start My Own Practice

Knowing when to start your own private practice is no easy decision. Working at a school, group practice or other agency while also starting and growing your own practice brings a multitude of challenges and questions as you decide the best time to take the leap into full time private practice.

Previously, I worked for a number of different organizations such as inpatient hospital intake team, outpatient program therapist, and an associate therapist at a group practice. My passion was always to start my own practice. I was unsure about when to do that. If only there had been a roadmap to answer all my questions.

Can you relate? Do you currently work at an agency and run a practice on the side? Or, are you considering leaving your current position to start your own practice?

While working the Intake Position at the hospital, I was exhausted as I admitted patients during the day and saw clients in my private practice in the evenings. As much as I wanted to do only private practice work, I knew I needed the income and benefits associated with hospital work.

Questions that were running through my mind when I first started my practice:

  • What kind of income can I make as a private practice owner?

  • How do I start a private practice while also working at an agency?

  • What systems and processes should I put in place to start seeing clients?

  • How do I follow God’s direction in my work as a therapist and practice owner?

  • What is the revenue formula for knowing when to go full time private practice?

The power of talking with others like you

I get it. I’ve been there, 6 years ago I started my private practice while I worked at a residential facility. The hours were exhausting. The caseload was overwhelming. And my personal life? Just forget it. However, I decided to make a change. I joined a mastermind group. And guess what? Within a year I was making six figures. Now I run a private practice that I love while seeing just the right number of clients. Not just any clients, the clients I want to help. As for my personal life, it’s incredible. I’m thankful I made the investment in myself half a decade ago and my wife and daughters are too.
